A Closer Look – Light Heavyweight Division

by Sean O’Sullivan
On the heels of UFC 135, the Light Heavyweight Division is on the brink of something it has not seen in quite some time, a truly undisputed defending champion. Long considered to be the most exciting division in the sport, the recent on-goings of the LHW division differ tremendously from the way things were merely five years ago. In April 2005, Chuck Liddell defeated Randy Couture to become the division’s champion. There had only been four previous champions up to that point, Couture, Vitor Belfort, Tito Ortiz, and …

A Closer Look – Middleweight Division

by Sean O’Sullivan

Coming off of yet another dominant title defense, UFC Middleweight champion Anderson Silva has solidified himself as the best 185lb fighter in the world, as well as possibly the greatest fighter of all time. Since entering the UFC back in 2006, Silva has gone 14-0 inside the Octagon. Nine of those fights were title defenses, and of the fourteen opponents, Silva has finished eleven. When you add in that Silva moved up in weight twice to fight as a Light Heavyweight, with one of those bouts being against …

A Closer Look – The Lightweight Division

A once forgotten division in the UFC, the Lightweight championship comes with quite a bit of history. Jens Pulver was crowned the first UFC Lightweight champion back in 2001, and defended his title twice before leaving the UFC due to contract dispute. The lightweight title then remained vacant from March 2002 til October 2006. At the end of ’02 and into ’03, the UFC held a small four man tournament featuring BJ Penn, Caol Uno, Din Thomas and Matt Serra, with the winner slated to claim the title. Penn and Uno met in 2003, fighting to a unanimous draw, leaving the title without an undisputed owner.

UFC 133 Analysis

After putting on 13 events through the first 6 months of 2011, the UFC took over a month off in between UFC 132 and UFC 133. Unfortunately for fight fans, there wasn’t all that much to look forward to in the lead up to the event. A card which seemed to be cursed, fans hearts’ sunk as names such Jon Jones, Phil Davis, Rich Franklin, Lil’ Nog, Vladimir Matyushenko, and Alessio Sakara were scratched due to injury, as well as a proposed FW title bout between Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes.

A Closer Look – The Heavyweight Division

by Sean O’Sullivan
Though many people may not currently realize it, the MMA world is on the brink  of unveiling something this sport has been missing for the past decade, and that is a clear cut undisputed heavyweight champion. If you look back at the Golden Years of boxing, it would include the likes of Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Sonny Liston, Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, and Joe Frazier all the way to Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield. When looking for dominant heavyweights in the MMA world, the list isn’t …

UFC 129 St. Pierre vs Shields Preview and Predictions

by Sean O’Sullivan
Twenty three thousand, one hundred and fifty two. That is the current attendance record for the UFC, set last December at UFC 124: St Pierre vs Koscheck, at the Bell Centre in Montreal. On April 30th, that record will be shattered. UFC 129 will take place at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, a venue which seats 55,000. Welterweight champion Georges St Pierre is once again the main attraction, as he defends his crown against possibly his toughest opponent to date, former Strikeforce Middleweight champion Jake Shields.
Also on the …

What to Watch for: April

by Sean O’Sullivan
As we move into the spring months, it’s surprising to look back on how much has happened in the MMA world in the first quarter of 2011. From Frankie Edgar’s epic comeback on New Year’s Day to Jon Jones dominant victory over Shogun Rua, we have seen our fair share of great fights so far this year. With crazy submissions like Chan Sung Jung’s twister on Leonard Garcia, and Richard Hale’s inverted triangle choke at Bellator 38, along with vicious knockouts like the front kick Anderson Silva planted …

One week after UFC 128, which featured one of the more defining fights in recent memory, the UFC was ready to put another Light Heavyweight prospect on display. The main event of UFN 24 featured Antonio Rogerio Nogueira taking on the young Phil Davis. While the rest of the main card consisted of just three more fights, each bout had all the makings to be fight of the night material.
Here is a quick recap of the four main card bouts, followed by a more in-depth analysis of each …

Bellator 37 recap

by Sean O’Sullivan
In the third week of Season 4, Bellator FC kicked off their Featherweight Tournament last Saturday, March 19th on MTV2. The first two weeks featured the beginnings of the Welterweight and Lightweight tournaments. Although three of the four welterweight bouts went to decision, all of the lightweight fights were finishes. Bellator has become known for putting on great fighters featuring not-so-well-known fighters, and with Bellator 37, we expected nothing less.
The night kicked off with Kenny Foster taking on Eric Larkin in the first quarterfinal bout. Foster showed no …
