A Closer Look – Middleweight Division

Coming off of yet another dominant title defense, UFC Middleweight champion Anderson Silva has solidified himself as the best 185lb fighter in the world, as well as possibly the greatest fighter of all time. Since entering the UFC back in 2006, Silva has gone 14-0 inside the Octagon. Nine of those fights were title defenses, and of the fourteen opponents, Silva has finished eleven. A Closer Look – The Lightweight Division

A once forgotten division in the UFC, the Lightweight championship comes with quite a bit of history. Jens Pulver was crowned the first UFC Lightweight champion back in 2001, and defended his title twice before leaving the UFC due to contract dispute. The lightweight title then remained vacant from March 2002 til October 2006. At the end of ’02 and into ’03, the UFC held a small four man tournament featuring BJ Penn, Caol Uno, Din Thomas and Matt Serra, with the winner slated to claim the title. Penn and Uno met in 2003, fighting to a unanimous draw, leaving the title without an undisputed owner.

Though many people may not currently realize it, the MMA world is on the brink  of unveiling something this sport has been missing for the past decade, and that is a clear cut undisputed heavyweight champion. If you look back at the Golden Years of boxing, it would include the likes of Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Sonny Liston, Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, and Joe Frazier all the way to Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield.
